Dr. Vivek Iyer is a Professor of Network Security and Infrastructure at GICCT, where he teaches the foundational discipline on which almost all other security depends. Networks are the terrain across which every attack travels, and he has spent his career learning to defend that terrain against adversaries of every kind.

Background and career

Dr. Iyer began as a network engineer, designing and operating the infrastructure that kept large organisations connected. It was there that he developed an intuition for how networks behave — and, crucially, how they misbehave when something is wrong. That operational grounding shaped his move into security, where he found that the best defenders are those who understand deeply how the underlying systems actually work.

He went on to design and operate defensive infrastructure for organisations of every size, from firewalls and intrusion-detection systems to the security monitoring that turns raw network traffic into actionable alerts. His doctoral research examined network anomaly detection at scale, addressing the perennial challenge of distinguishing genuine threats from the constant background noise of a busy network. He holds the CCIE Security certification, one of the most demanding credentials in the field.

Areas of expertise

Dr. Iyer’s expertise covers secure network architecture, firewall and intrusion-detection and -prevention design, network segmentation, VPNs and secure remote access, and the security monitoring practices that give organisations visibility into what is actually happening on their networks. He has particular depth in understanding how attacks move laterally through a network once an initial foothold is established — and how proper segmentation can contain them.

He also brings strong knowledge of the evolving network landscape, including the security implications of cloud connectivity, zero-trust architectures, and the dissolution of the traditional network perimeter. He helps students understand that while the old model of a hard outer shell and soft interior is obsolete, the fundamental principles of network defence remain as relevant as ever.

Dr. Iyer believes strong security begins with genuinely understanding the network beneath it, and his courses reflect that conviction. He builds from first principles — how traffic flows, how protocols work, where trust is placed and where it is exploited — before moving to advanced defensive techniques. Every concept is reinforced through hands-on configuration, because he knows that network security cannot be learned in the abstract.

He is patient with students who arrive without a networking background, having seen many of them become excellent security professionals once the foundational concepts click into place. At the same time, he pushes experienced students hard, challenging them with the kind of realistic scenarios they will face defending real infrastructure.

At the institute, Dr. Iyer leads the Network Security Fundamentals program and mentors students taking their first steps toward a security career. He is a firm believer that network security is the bedrock on which everything else is built, and that no security professional is complete without a solid grasp of it.
